Frequently Asked

Who is LaDonna Humphrey?

LaDonna Humphrey is an Arkansas-based true crime author, podcaster, and cold-case researcher, best known for her work on the Melissa Witt murder investigation. She's also the subject of harassment and intimidation allegations from multiple former associates and family members, covered in this PRETEND investigation.

What is LaDonna Humphrey accused of?

Multiple people, including her former podcast co-host Alecia Lockhart and her former employer Anthony Christopher, say Humphrey sent them anonymous, spoofed, or threatening messages. Humphrey denies the allegations.

Was LaDonna Humphrey convicted of a crime?

No criminal charges tied to these harassment allegations have been publicly reported. In a civil case brought by her former employer Anthony Christopher, a court held her in contempt in August 2019, entered a $3.57 million judgment against her in September 2019, and ordered 10 days in jail in October 2019.

Is LaDonna Humphrey connected to the Melissa Witt murder case?

Yes, though separately from the harassment allegations. Humphrey has spent years investigating Witt's unsolved 1994 murder as a cold-case researcher, including a book and a documentary, and has publicly disputed conclusions reached by law enforcement and a Hulu documentary on the case. She's also accused of her own misconduct connected to the case: per PRETEND's reporting, she had access to files from the still-open investigation and posted body-camera footage from the scene to YouTube, and Patty Rush says Humphrey sent her raw crime-scene video and showed her police records that were never made public.

What is the "Fetish Master" account?

An anonymous forum account Alecia Lockhart says was used to threaten her. In November 2022, Humphrey sent Lockhart a screenshot showing her logged in under that name. Humphrey acknowledges the screenshot but says the forum altered her account, and she denies creating it.

People Named in This Investigation

The Subject and Her Response

LaDonna Humphrey
Subject of this investigation

Arkansas true crime author, podcaster, and cold-case researcher. Disputes the harassment allegations covered in this series.

Accused of Tormenting Her Own Podcast Co-Host

Alecia Lockhart
LaDonna Humphrey's former podcast co-host and co-author

Lockhart and Humphrey were podcast co-hosts and co-authors; a 2010 filming incident Lockhart says happened to her in Portland, Oregon became the basis of Humphrey's own podcast and book on the subject. Lockhart says Humphrey later tormented her anonymously online under the screen name "Fetish Master," detailed elsewhere on this page. Humphrey has denied being behind the account. The two are no longer associated.

Accused of Harassing Her Former Boss

Anthony Christopher
Former employer

Owner of the pediatric therapy clinic where Humphrey briefly worked. Sued her over what he described as a harassment campaign against his business and reputation; the resulting 2019 civil case ended in a $3.57 million judgment against Humphrey and produced the clearest documented legal outcome in this investigation.

Former Employer

Jon Allen
Pastor; former employer

Humphrey worked as his church secretary. His family has accused her of financial misconduct during that time, which she denies. Allen was charged with felony arson in 2016 over a 2015 fire at his home; the charge was later dropped. PRETEND has found no evidence Humphrey was involved in the fire.

Say They Were Harassed With No Connection to Each Other

These people say they had no connection to one another before their own separate conflicts with Humphrey. She is the only common thread between their accounts.

Margo Elston
LaDonna Humphrey's sister

Came forward with her account of the family's estrangement, including a period in her life when she says she received anonymous, threatening messages. She does not claim certainty about who sent them.

Kym Pasqualini
Founder, Nation's Missing Children Organization

Says Humphrey proposed a nonprofit merger and claimed to have secured a $1 million grant that Pasqualini says never materialized; says her email and LinkedIn accounts were later hacked from an Arkansas IP address.

Patty Rush
Founder, REVAMP victims' advocacy group

Says Humphrey showed her non-public police records from the Witt case and sent her raw crime-scene video, and that she began receiving threatening texts signed "Muffin Man" after reporting Humphrey's access to police.

Cindy
Former house manager and resident, Oasis of Northwest Arkansas

Says residents' locations were tracked constantly and rent money didn't appear to reach Oasis itself. Says she personally received anonymous, sexually explicit spoofed messages while at Oasis, and that Humphrey admitted to sending them when confronted directly.

Mel
Former house manager and resident, Oasis of Northwest Arkansas

Describes a climate of constant monitoring and fear of expulsion at Oasis. Says she left abruptly after PRETEND's reporting aired, and that Humphrey texted her afterward asking why she left without saying goodbye.

Kaylin
Former resident of Oasis of Northwest Arkansas

Describes what she calls a terrifying experience as a resident at the sober-living facility Humphrey has operated.

Randalyn
Former resident of Oasis of Northwest Arkansas

Says she received harassing emails after leaving the facility.

Connected to the Melissa Witt Cold Case

Unlike the people above, neither of these two has accused Humphrey of harassment. They're included here because of the unrelated cold case she has also reported on.

Charles Ray Vines
Cleared suspect, Melissa Witt murder case (died 2019)

A suspect Arkansas law enforcement investigated and ruled out in the 1994 murder of Melissa Witt. Humphrey has publicly disputed that he was properly ruled out.

Daniel Watson
Melissa Witt's former boyfriend

Humphrey has not named Watson publicly as a suspect in Witt's murder, but has said so privately, and has alluded to him in projects including her books. He has not been charged.

“Who’s Afraid of LaDonna Humphrey” is PRETEND’s multi-part investigation into LaDonna Humphrey, an Arkansas-based true crime author, podcaster, and cold-case researcher, and harassment allegations brought against her by former associates and family members.

Multiple people describe a pattern of anonymous, spoofed messages and public intimidation they connect to Humphrey. They include her own sister, Margo Elston, who says she received anonymous, threatening messages during a period of family estrangement. Humphrey has denied the allegations directly to PRETEND and disputes her accusers’ credibility in turn.

The clearest documented outcome is a civil court record: in August 2019, a court held Humphrey in contempt for destroying evidence, sending spoof emails, and falsely claiming her accounts had been hacked, and ordered 10 days in jail.

Per court records, the court also ordered a $3.57 million judgment and a permanent restraining order. No criminal charges tied to the harassment allegations covered in this series have been publicly reported, and LaDonna Humphrey disputes the allegations.

Apart from any harassment allegations, Humphrey has also built a public profile investigating the unrelated Melissa Witt cold case, disputing conclusions reached by law enforcement and a Hulu documentary series on the case.

Oasis of Northwest Arkansas

Separately, former staff of Oasis of Northwest Arkansas, the sober-living facility Humphrey has run for nearly seven years, describe a controlling, financially opaque operation there, distinct from the harassment allegations above. To protect their privacy, PRETEND is identifying former Oasis residents by first name only.

Cindy, a former house manager who was a resident herself before joining staff, told PRETEND that residents’ locations were tracked continuously through a phone app, with a dead battery or a few minutes’ tardiness treated as grounds for dismissal. She also said that rent money, including funds from an outside rental-assistance program, didn’t appear to reach Oasis itself. “We didn’t see any of it,” she said. “It went to her.” Cindy says she was present when Oasis asked a grant program for $15,000 to buy vehicles for residents; she says no vehicles were ever purchased, and that she suspects some of that money went toward a newer SUV she later saw Humphrey driving, though she couldn’t confirm that. Cindy also says she personally received anonymous, sexually explicit spoofed messages while at Oasis, and that when she confronted Humphrey directly and asked if she was behind them, Humphrey texted back: “It’s me, I did it.”

A second former manager, who goes by Mel, described a similar climate of constant monitoring and fear of expulsion. She says she left Oasis abruptly on July 4th after listening to PRETEND’s reporting, worried she’d be found out before she could leave on her own terms, and that Humphrey texted her afterward: “Hi, friend. Why’d you leave without saying goodbye?”

Oasis’s board of directors has publicly stood behind Humphrey, writing in a statement that she has led the organization “with unwavering passion and excellence” and that its “financial management” and “program guidelines” are “conducted with the utmost excellence.”

PRETEND has also heard from another former resident who says she received harassing emails after leaving, and a former manager who has raised concerns about how grant money was used. PRETEND has not verified how the grant funding was spent.

The “Fetish Master” Account

Alecia Lockhart is Humphrey’s former podcast co-host and co-author; the two co-hosted and co-wrote together for years before parting ways and are no longer associated. In November 2022, Humphrey sent Lockhart a screenshot of a forum page that Lockhart says showed Humphrey logged in as “Fetish Master,” the account Lockhart says had been sending her threatening messages. Lockhart wrote to Humphrey:

How long have you been Fetish Master? I can see that you’re logged into that account on this screen shot.

Text exchange between Alecia Lockhart and LaDonna Humphrey, with a screenshot of the Fetish Master forum profile
The text exchange and forum screenshot Lockhart shared with PRETEND, November 2022.

Humphrey replied:

I’m not Fetish Master. That is super weird. I was logged in as StrangledForest.

In her May 2024 interview with PRETEND, Humphrey acknowledged the screenshot showed her logged in under that account. She said she couldn’t explain it technically and believes the forum altered her account after flagging her IP address. She denies creating the account. The forum’s main administrator told PRETEND he knew of no way to merge two accounts on the forum, that he had recently deleted the Fetish Master account, and that Humphrey’s own account still existed and had been deactivated, not renamed. According to Lockhart, the anonymous harassment stopped the day she confronted Humphrey. PRETEND has not independently verified who created the account.

PRETEND dedicated an entire season of the show to this investigation, and our reporting continues as new information comes in.

Key Dates

Before the Allegations

  1. 1993

LaDonna Humphrey, then 19, is hired as an assistant at Pastor Jon Allen's Arkansas church. The Allen family later accuses her of payroll irregularities, which she denies; no charges are filed.

  2. Dec 1994 – Jan 1995

19-year-old Melissa Witt disappears from an Arkansas bowling alley and is found dead weeks later, a cold case Humphrey would later become publicly involved in.

  3. 2005

Humphrey co-founds the missing-persons nonprofit Let's Bring Them Home.

  4. 2007

Per journalist James Renner's reporting and accounts from the family of missing New Hampshire woman Maura Murray, Humphrey's nonprofit offers a reward in the Murray case; the family and other advocates later raise concerns about how tips sent to the nonprofit's tip line were handled.

  5. May–June 2007

According to Margo Elston, LaDonna's sister, LaDonna told family and friends she had given birth to a baby girl who died weeks later, around the same time as their grandfather's death. Margo and their mother say no record of the birth or death exists in Arkansas and that LaDonna was never pregnant.

A Pattern Emerges (2010–2018)

  1. 2010

Kym Pasqualini, founder of the Nation's Missing Children Organization, says Humphrey proposed a merger with her own nonprofit and claimed to have secured a $1 million grant; the merger fell through, and Pasqualini says her email and LinkedIn accounts were later hacked from an Arkansas IP address.

  2. 2010

Alecia Lockhart says that while working as a young production assistant in Portland, Oregon, she was paid to appear in a video for a director with an interest in "death fetish" content, and that more was filmed than she had agreed to. She would later work with Humphrey investigating the Witt case.

  3. June 2015

Pastor Jon Allen's house in Winslow, Arkansas, burns down.

  4. 2016

May 2016: Allen is arrested and charged with felony arson. Investigators allege he set the fire, according to a probable cause affidavit reported by the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Humphrey, a former employee of his church, was among the people investigators interviewed. The charge is later dropped. PRETEND has found no evidence Humphrey was involved in the fire.

  5. 2017–2018

Humphrey is hired, and later leaves, a pediatric therapy clinic owned by Anthony Christopher. Spoofed and anonymous messages targeting Christopher and his associates begin; he sues her. A state audit of the clinic separately finds about $41,000 in payments needs to be refunded to Medicaid, though no fraud is substantiated.

The 2019 Reckoning

  1. March 2019

Patty Rush, founder of the victims'-advocacy group REVAMP, tells police that Humphrey showed her a police document from the Witt case that was never made public and sent her raw crime-scene video. Around the same time, Rush says she begins receiving threatening texts signed "Muffin Man."

  2. April 2019

In the civil case brought by Anthony Christopher, a digital forensic examiner called by Christopher's attorney testifies that, in his opinion, the spoofed messages are linked to Humphrey's accounts. Humphrey denies sending them.

  3. April 29, 2019

A Benton County Sheriff's detective investigating Humphrey's report that her phone was stolen from her vehicle finds no evidence she made a false report, after correcting a time-zone error in phone records Christopher had provided. Christopher's forensic expert later testifies that Humphrey's old SIM card was inserted into a new phone the day after the reported theft — testimony that preceded the court's own finding, in the August 14 order below, that the phone was not stolen.

  4. August 14, 2019

The court finds Humphrey in contempt, strikes her answer, and dismisses her counterclaim as a sanction for destroying evidence. Because her defense was struck, liability is never tried on the merits.

  5. September 23, 2019

After a damages hearing, the court enters a $3,570,977.88 judgment (half compensatory, half punitive) and permanent injunctions, finding she sent anonymous emails and messages about Christopher and his business knowing they were false.

  6. October 2, 2019

At a sanctions hearing, the court orders 10 days in jail, two days for each of five findings: that she falsely claimed her phone was stolen, destroyed evidence, sent spoof emails, falsely claimed her accounts were hacked, and falsely claimed her Apple account was deleted.

Recent Years (2020–Present)

  1. 2020s

Humphrey continues cold-case work on the Melissa Witt murder, including a 2022 book and a 2023 documentary, while separately operating Oasis of Northwest Arkansas, a sober-living facility former residents later publicly accuse of a pattern of threats.

  2. November 2022

Alecia Lockhart says an anonymous "Fetish Master" account begins threatening her, and that a screenshot Humphrey sent her shows Humphrey logged in under that name, which Humphrey acknowledges but attributes to the forum altering her account. Humphrey has denied being behind the account; the harassment stops the day Lockhart confronts her about it, according to Lockhart. See below for more detail.

  3. December 2023

Humphrey's nonprofit, All the Lost Girls, offers a $29,000 reward in the Witt case, in partnership with her Who Killed Missy Witt investigative team.

  4. June 2024

PRETEND's "Who's Afraid of LaDonna Humphrey" series launches. Humphrey's attorney sends PRETEND cease-and-desist and trademark-infringement letters.

  5. July 29, 2025

The Eighth Circuit rules that Humphrey's challenge to the bankruptcy sale of her appellate rights to Christopher, for $12,500, is moot because no stay was in place. The sale stands, meaning Absolute — not Humphrey — now holds the right to pursue her state-court appeal of the underlying judgment, which has been stayed since 2020 pending the bankruptcy dispute.
